  Please, join our Scandinavian Club member, Caroline Bergan (soprano) and Ed Bok (piano) for the "Embrace... the ways we love" Concert. It is a Benefit Recital to support her 6 Capital University Vocal Music students, who have been selected to attend the Summer in Salzberg program, to sing in an opera program with her. All proceeds from concert ticket prices and donations go directly to the students for their Summer Abroad study.

  Come enjoy her singing Norwegian music, and that by Poulenc, Korngold, Puccini, Lehár, Strauss II and Weill. A reception will follow, hosted by students attending the summer program. 

  Note: You may recall that in 2024, FORTY Club members were treated to a magnificent performance by Caroline and the Diction Club Singers in their "Under the Northern Lights" Concert! This concert promises to be of the same memorable quality. Plus, it would be great to support her vocal music students and to encourage Caroline's efforts to share exceptional vocal music (especially Scandinavian music) with those of us in Ohio.

  About the Movie

  This exceptional film received several accolades and nominations. Roger Ebert praised director, Jan Troell, as "perhaps the best of the post-Bergman generation of Swedish filmmakers." The movie depicts the struggles of regular people in their enduring and challenging efforts to establish themselves in the rugged mid-1800's Minnesota and America.

  In the second part (after the PAUSE) of The New Land's life-journey, join us for the continuation of a thought-provoking and moving movie that allows us to better understand Swedes of yesteryear and now, and the complex historic context of that time. Note: This movie will get you thinking and feeling and will foster discussion.

  Gather the family together and join celebrated Finnish musicians Soili Perkiö and Maija Karhinen-Ilo for an hour of Scandinavian music. Soili and Maija return to us for some springtime music – this captivating and engaging hour of singing, dancing, and play will set toes tapping for participants of every age!

  Soili Perkiö studied music education, piano, and voice at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland, and advanced studies in dance and music education at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg in the Orff Institute. She specializes in music and movement, folk music, and early childhood music education. Since 1995, Soili has been a lecturer in the Department of Music Education, Sibelius Academy, Helsinki. She has also taught at educational conferences on all continents. Soili has worked for the Finnish Broadcast Company and made TV and radio programs for children. She continues to give concerts in schools and kindergartens introducing Finnish folk instruments and has composed music for dance groups, theatre performances, and songs for children. Soili has also written over 70 music books and audio material for general music education, elementary school, and early childhood music education.

  Maija Karhinen-Ilo is a musician, teacher, and Assistant Head at Käpylä Music Institute. Maija is a multi-instrumentalist who sings, plays, dances, composes, arranges, and performs. She has performed with the band Freija and as a vocal soloist since 2005, and she is well known for her children’s music. Maija has a Doctor of Arts from the Sibelius Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki.   Orienteering: A Great, Outdoors Scandi Adventure for ALL!
  

  Welcome to the 2025 orienteering season in Columbus, Ohio, fellow Scandinavians! Central Ohio Orienteers (COO) will have its second 2025 event on Saturday, May 10 at Slate Run Metro Park, Canal Winchester. Dress in layers, prepare for rain, and come with an extra pair of socks and shoes in your car because May can be a muddy month! We had a very good turnout in March, including new people! Let's keep it up!

  Brain Benefits: In a study specifically done of orienteering and how good it is for our brains, they found orienteering makes us use so much of our brain to figure out where we are and how to get to the next place we want to go. Orienteering, for sure, gets us out into nature and outside of our daily routines.

  Event Logistics 

  Look for conspicuous signage at events, typically a large white/orange square at the park entrance and another near the reserved shelter/park section where the club starts and finishes. Electronic punching on the long, advanced courses, will start with the May meet. We will still offer traditional, manual red "paper punches".

  Start your walk or run between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Details are available on the COO website or COO Facebook pages. If possible, let's meet at 11 a.m. at the start or see you on the trail.

  SLATE RUN DIRECTIONS: From I-270 take US 33 South toward Lancaster for about 5 miles. Go south on Gender Rd through Canal Winchester. At the round-about, take SR 674 until you reach the Park entrance on your right.

  After entering the park, follow the orange and white square at the entrance, continue to the shelterhouse, which has another orange and white square. The start is on the right.
