Orienteering: A Great, Outdoors Scandi Adventure for ALL!

Orienteering is good for EVERYONE, of ALL AGES.  Anyone who likes a scavenger hunt in the outdoors, will like this. Anyone who doesn't like that sort of thing, needs to try it once in a while anyway to keep their brains active and doing new things!

    Event Details

    • There will always be easy and difficult courses in the orienteering events. The events are held mostly at local Metro Parks around Columbus.
    • There is also always compass instruction available. There are several people available for instruction at every event, including Annie Almstedt, our Scandi Club Coordinator.
    • Lastly, the Club (Central Ohio Orienteering) will also go looking for anyone we THINK got lost if they haven't checked back in. So - we have a safety net!
    • Events occur, come rain or shine. If raining, consider bringing dry clothes/shoes for changing.

What is the connection to Scandinavia?
Orienteering is a historically late 1800s Scandinavian military training task, which morphed over the decades into a sporting event. Every year, Sweden hosts one of the largest international orienteering events in the world, called the "O-Ringen".

If all other nudges to encourage you to get out there and go to a COO event have failed, then let me note this: Your Scandinavian heritage is calling you to go orienteer in 2024! We've formed an "Orienteering Scandi-League" this year, and we'll celebrate the results in December!

Brain Benefits: Time magazine - and other news outlets - reported on a study specifically done of orienteering and how good it is for our brains. It makes us use so much of our brain to figure out where we are and how to get to the next place we want to go. It is actually good to "get lost" and it is good to get out of the normal routine. Orienteering offers some risk of getting lost while we figure out a pathway, and for sure it gets us out into nature, outside of our daily routines.

As Annie Almstedt, our Scandi-Orienteering Coordinator, says, "It's the perfect sport. I know I am better at it NOW than I was 5 years ago, but I have this crazy hope I can still get better. So, I go as often as I can, all year round. It's good to do hard things!"

    Syttende Mai

Come celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day with us! We'll be meeting at the IKEA on Polaris (1900 Ikea Way) on Saturday, May 18th from 9:30am to 11am.

There will be a short program on Norwegian wood carving, a fun parade with the Norwegian flag with kids and Norwegian Bunads and all who want to parade, an invitation to bring and share a single Norwegian treasure (smaller than a breadbox) with Scandinavian friends and new colleagues plus coffee and reasonable Scandinavian style breakfast would be attractive to many. We hope we get the chance to celebrate with you!

Dine, Dance and Celebrate the Scandinavian Midsommar at Alum Creek

Ready to Say 'Hej' to Midsommar?

What's that you smell? Ah, yes, it's the sweet floral hurricane of mid-June nature, moments away from their show-stopping, 'HELLO WORLD' performance! And hold on ... Did you hear that? It's the collective sigh of school bells across the country, bidding adieu to algebra and adjectives for the season.

So, what's next? An Instagrammable pool party? Nah, been there. A backyard barbecue? Pfft, done that. Friends, it's time for the good ol' Midsommar blowout! We love to indulge in the rich tradition of Scandinavia, and sincerely hope you'll join us for this damn-near irresistible feast of fun!

But hold on ... For those of you scratching your heads and reaching for your Google-Fu, let me clear up the 'what's what' of Midsommar. This warmly-embraced Scandinavian party marks the sultry peak of summer, and is the no-brainer choice for a knock-your-socks-off mid-year fiesta.

Let’s Break It Down: Your Midsommar Cheat Sheet

The festivities kick-off with the decorating of a Maypole at 4pm. Get your hands dirty and awaken your inner artist by adorning our towering Maypole with nature’s finest – like pretty little leafy branches and cheery blooms (PS: feel free to enlist the help of a local florist who’s parting ways with some floral beauties).

And for all those suddenly parched – refresh, quench and repeat with an array of cold drinks, beer, and wine (open pandora’s box and sip some Nordic Midsommar specials!).

    • 5pm: And in case your tummy starts to rumble, feast your taste buds on the traditional Scandinavian Herring Table and a buffet of mouthwatering sides and desserts bought to you by ... drumroll ... You!
    • 6pm: As the sun starts to bow, shake a leg, twirl and sway at the rhythm of Midsommar games, perfect for kids and kids-at-heart alike. Have fun flipping your entire universe in the wild rotation of Karusellen, or put on your imaginary space-helmet and prep for takeoff with Raketen!

Oh, but hold your horses! The party isn't ready just yet. We're still perfecting the blend of tradition and fun for you. So, hold onto your flower crowns and keep those peepers peeled for more details. We're almost there, folks. Almost there
